Mag. Dr. Matthäus Graf Thun-Hohenstein

† 19.05.2025

Excerpt from the Chancellor´s letter on the passing away:

It is with great sadness that I have to inform you of the passing of our Order Knight Mag. Dr. Matthäus Graf Thun-Hohenstein, who left us on 19 May 2025 at the age of 62 after a long and serious illness.

Our Order Knight, who lived with his family in Klosterneuburg, studied business administration and philosophy. His professional career took him to Volksbank at a young age, where he worked in various functions and in different countries – including as a member of the bank’s management board. He has also written several books. His latest, entitled ‘Bardak – A Ukrainian fairy tale with a riot’, was published in December 2024.

Matthäus was admitted to our Order in Salzburg in 2011 and belonged to the Commandery Niederösterreich – Heldenberg. His illness severely restricted his mobility in recent years, which is why his wife, Order Dame Sanela Gräfin Thun-Hohenstein, repeatedly organised meetings at their home in Klosterneuburg, often on the occasion of their son Massimo. Our Order Knight accepted his fate with impressive strength and was always deeply committed to the Order, even in these difficult times.

My and our sincere condolences go to the relatives and loved ones – especially to his wife Sanela and his son Massimo.
