Dr. Ulrich-Walter Lipp

† 14.02.2024

Excerpt from the Chancellor’s letter on the passing away:

I regret to inform you of the passing of our Honorary Knight Dr. Ulrich-Walter Lipp, who died on 14 February 2024 at the age of 79 after a long and serious illness.

Dr. Ulrich-Walter Lipp was admitted to our Order as an Honorary Knight in our Order’s residence on 14 December 2020 at the request of our Grand Master. Unfortunately, he was already in poor health at the time, meaning that he was unable to continue to participate in Order life, but remained in close contact with Knights of the Order and officials.

He had a deep friendship with the Habsburg family, and in particular HIRH Otto von Habsburg himself, which lasted for decades; they often spent their summers together in the Habsburgs’ country cottage in Benidorm/Spain. Over the years, Lipp, who had studied law in Graz, also found his official role: he organised Archduke Otto’s 90th birthday, his golden wedding in Mariazell and helped with the preparations for Emperor Karl’s beatification.

Ulli Lipp was also very familiar with aristocratic protocol at public events. Finally, he was master of ceremonies at the funeral of HIRH Otto von Habsburg and thus the man who performed the famous Knocking Ceremony at the Capuchin Church.

In Honorary Knight Dr. Ulrich-Walter Lipp, we are losing a Knight of the Order who carried the values of our Order deep in his heart and whose knowledge and experience will be greatly missed. My and our sincere condolences go to the relatives and loved ones.
